Walking With the Lord<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhen Jesus said, \u201cFollow me,\u201d He was expressing the goal of God in all creation \u2013 God walking with man in perfect fellowship.
\nThe purpose of all of Christ\u2019s teachings is to instruct us in how to achieve this marvelous privilege. We must delight in His Word and understand His way of thinking. We must learn His ways and do His work in the power of the Holy Spirit.
\nEach of the forty-nine* commands of Christ express an important aspect of our walk with the Lord and our love for others. Loving God and loving others must be the central focus of this study, because that is the sum total of all Christ\u2019s teaching and of all the rest of the Scriptures.
\n(*Jesus gave many commands; however, this group of commands was chosen to represent the basic \u201ccurriculum\u201d that Christ gave His disciples \u2013 commands that we are to keep and teach others in order to be His disciples.)\u201d<\/p>\n

Keeping Christ\u2019s Commands<\/strong><\/span>
\nJesus said that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments (see John 14:15.) The Greek word tereo, translated \u201ckeep,\u201d means to guard, protect, watch over, observe closely, and hold fast.
\nDuring the days of celestial navigation, mariners would maintain a course in the vast waters by keeping the stars at a certain position, using them to guide the ship toward its destination.
\nJesus used this concept when He told His disciples to keep His commands. The commands are fixed \u201clights\u201d that can be trusted to guide us through the storms of life. If we follow them, we will arrive at our destination safely, bearing much fruit.
\nAs we keep Christ\u2019s commands before us, we will be more ready to live them out. \u201cBut thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein\u201d (Joshua 1:8; see also Leviticus 20:8).\u201d<\/p>\n

Rewards for Keeping Christ\u2019s Commands<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u2022 \u00a0God will reveal Himself to us.<\/em><\/strong>
\n\u201cHe who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.\u201d (John 14:21)
\n\u2022 \u00a0God will dwell in us.<\/strong>
\n\u201cIf anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.\u201d (John 14:23)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will receive God\u2019s love.<\/strong>
\n\u201cIf you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father\u2019s commandments and abide in His love.\u201d (John 15:10)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will know we love God.<\/strong>
\n\u201cNow by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.\u00a0He who says, \u201cI know Him,\u201d and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.\u00a0But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.\u201d (1 John 2:3-5)\u201d
\n\u201cIf you love Me, keep My commandments.\u201d (John 14:15)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will love others.<\/strong>
\n\u201cBy this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.\u201d (1 John 5:2)
\n\u2022 \u00a0Christ will be our Friend.<\/strong>
\n\u201cYou are My friends if you do whatever I command you.\u201d (John 15:14)
\n\u2022 \u00a0Our prayers will be answered.<\/strong>
\n\u201cAnd whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.\u201d (1 John 3:22)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will be disciples.<\/strong>
\n\u201cA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.\u201d (John 13:34-35)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will have true joy.<\/strong>
\n\u201cThese things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.\u201d (John 15:11)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will be purified.<\/strong>
\n\u201cYou are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.\u201d (John 15:3)
\n\u201cSanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.\u201d (John 17:17)
\n\u2022 \u00a0We will have peace.<\/strong>
\n\u201cThese things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.\u201d (John 16:33)\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
