Florida Prison Ministry – Week 1

(written October 5th)

Today was the day I went to prison for the first time!  I can’t even describe how awesome it was!! :D  I actually didn’t want to leave!
I had to laugh as we entered the prison because one of the first officers I met said in excitement, “So you’re the 19 year old!!”  ;)  He was shocked to say the least that someone so young would leave home to do this type of work.  Only someone that’s listening to God would do such a crazy thing I suppose :)
I was able to meet so many of the head staff, including the warden and many of the girls in the JOY dorm.
Everyone I met was just so bright and joyful and I really couldn’t keep from smiling!  It was clear that God’s Spirit was so present there in the prison.  I honestly felt as I was walking through the halls, that this was one of the most happy places I have ever been!  That can’t be said about every prison, I’m sure, but God is doing an amazing work in FWRC and dramatically transforming lives.
We even got the chance to pray with a lady who works in the office.  She was just so amazed at how each of us girls would leave our homes to come here and do this work, and she was admiring how joyful we all were. *insert Jesus!!* She even cried as we prayed and shared how it’s really God doing the work in us.  And He can do it for her too!
Another amazing moment came when we were walking past the waiting room and we passed a women from the JOY dorm named Charlotte.  She was crying and distressed because of a family tragedy that had just occurred the day before. Her mother had died.  I got to meet Charlotte and her eyes just lit up as we were talking.  She said that she was trusting God and holding on to her faith in this rough time, but of course it was still really painful for her.
I must say it does feel odd to call someone 40 years older than me by her first name while she calls me Miss Nakatsu, but it instills respect for authority.  I guess it will just take getting used to. :)
I can’t wait to see all that God has in store for Ruthie, Sophia, and I as we serve Him in the JOY dorm!  He’s already answered SO many prayers. It’s also amazing to see how he perfectly formed our little team, with each of us having unique gifts and strengths. We refer to ourselves as Peter, James, and John because our spiritual gifts are prophet, organizer, and mercy. 😊
But please keep praying!! I need prayer warriors on my side during this incredible journey!
Please pray:
My faith would continue to be strengthened
God would teach me to pray with confidence and fervency
Charlotte and her family
God would remind me of His Word during time of need.
He would bless and strengthen our team of 3 😊
““The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭61:1‬ ‭
…and I can’t do it without prayer!!
